The Makings of a Chapter

There are five stages in the birth of a chapter:

Prospect

A potential chapter reaches this stage when there exists a person or persons interested in sponsoring or being a part of the extension effort, and such interest has been documented with the National Office.

Interest Group

The chapter progresses to this stage when the prospect group has met the following requirements:
  • A group sponsor has been appointed by the Regional Director
  • The sponsor, prospect group and advisors (if any) have reviewed Guide to Starting a New Chapter
  • Permission to bring Alpha Phi Omega to the campus has been granted by the school in writing
  • A minimum of three students have joined the prospective group
  • A minimum of one service project has been conducted and documented
  • The prospective group completes and submits the "Application for Interest Group Status" to the National Office, along with a roster of members and advisors (if any) , contact information, documentation from the service project, signatures denoting compliance with Alpha Phi Omega's Membership and Risk Management policies and approval of the Regional Director and the Section Chair
It usually takes two to four weeks to reach this stage.

Petitioning Group

Okay, that wasn't so bad. The interest group moves on to this stage after the following steps:
  • The interest group's sponsor and/or the Section staff conduct an orientation of Alpha Phi Omega for the group's students and advisors
  • A minimum of six students and one advisor have joined the interest group
  • Students select a president and assign other important responsibilities, such as service, membership, fellowship, finances, etc.
  • Students plan, implement and document at least four more service projects. The projects must cover al east two of the four fields of service (Chapter, Campus, Community, Country)
  • Students plan, implement and document at least one fellowship project, which must be attended by no less than one-fourth of the interest group members
  • Students complete an initial draft of the bylaws
  • The prospective group completes and submits the "Application for Petitioning Group Status" to the National Office, along with a roster of members and advisors (if any) , contact information, documentation from the service projects and fellowship project, signatures denoting compliance with Alpha Phi Omega's Membership and Risk Management policies and approval of the Regional Director and a chapter advisor (Section Chair may sign for Regional Director if he/she is not available)
  • A petitioning fee of $20 for each student member of the group (no fee for advisors or students who are already brothers)
  • A Petitioning Ceremony has been conducted
An petitioning group gains certain rights that an interest group does not have, but it does have limitations that are reserved for a fully registered chapter.
It usually takes 10 to 20 weeks to reach this stage from Interest Group level.
